Incorporating the Former Lead-Free Solders and Materials for Nuclear Power Communities of Materials Technology@TMS

Energy security, resource sustainability, environmental issues, and aging infrastructure are just a few of the challenges facing 21st century society, and many of these pressing needs can be met by creative engineering solutions. To facilitate the development of materials solutions to meet global needs, TMS has opened the Materials and Society community, an on-line gathering place where scientists and engineers from throughout the world can meet, discuss ideas, and share resources that could lead to important social advances.
For the site to have maximum impact, this new community is open to all members of the materials science and engineering community at no charge. This on-line technical community is enhanced by user contributions and user participation. It is meant to be a place where scientists and engineers can meet to discuss their work, solicit ideas from others in the field, stay up-to-date with news from their fields, and access resources to help them in their work.
For those who used to regularly visit the Materials for Nuclear Power and Lead-Free Solders communities of the initial Materials Technology@TMS web site, the new Materials and Society Community will continue to support the development of these areas and will incorporate all of the digital resources from these communities. But the site has also been expanded to include a variety of recycling, energy, and environmental issues, as well.
In the "Community Resources" box in the upper right corner of this page, you'll find links to publications and conferences related to materials and society and an entry to the community discussion groups. You will also find two Digital Resource Centers, each one containing articles, web links, videos, PowerPoint presentations, webcasts, and other resources. The Materials for Nuclear Power and Lead-Free Solders resource centers are taken from the previous Materials Technology@TMS communities, and new resources will soon be added related to Materials Sustainability. These resources can be accessed and downloaded by all web users—no log in required. To participate in discussions or to post resources, simply create a free registration through the "New User?" link in the above toolbar. TMS members can use their member log in to contribute to the site.
In the future, this introductory page will be updated monthly with feature stories that provide insight into new developments and activities related to a broad range of materials and society issues. If you are engaged in work or research that you would like to share with the materials community, submit a 1-2 page overview, detailing the significance of your research results, to the editorial staff of TMS for publication consideration in this space. In addition, the "News" tab above will provide regular news headlines from all aspects of materials and society.
For other recent spotlight stories, please visit the Archive tab.
