In observation of the U.S. presidential inauguration in Washington, D.C., the U.S. Geological Survey is promoting its online educational tool, Building Stones of Our Nation’s Capital. This resource traces the use of geological materials in constructing Washington D.C.’s iconic monuments, landmarks, and buildings. Decisions based on material properties, appearance, and availability are discussed, as well as preservation strategies.
