Entering a New Phase for Classifying Matter |
Posted on: 12/26/2012 12:00:00 AM... Forget solid, liquid, and gas. There are actually more than 500 phases of matter, according to a paper published in the December 21 issue of Science.
Using modern mathematics, the authors describe a new system which can successfully classify symmetry-protected phases of matter. The paper, titled, “Symmetry-Protected Topological Orders in Interacting Bosonic Systems,” examines the world of quantum entanglement, while also suggesting a modern reclassification of all phases of matter that can enhance the ability to design states of matter for use in superconductors or quantum computers.
