NSF Innovation Corps Announces First Round of Awardees |
Posted on: 10/17/2011 12:00:00 AM... The National Science Foundation (NSF) announced on October 6 that it has selected 21 teams for the inaugural class of NSF Innovation Corps (I-Corps) awards. Many of these teams are focused on materials innovations.
The NSF I-Corps was established in July 2011 as a new opportunity to help develop scientific and engineering discoveries into useful technologies, products and processes. As a public-private partnership, the program connects NSF-funded scientific research with the technological, entrepreneurial. and business communities to help create a stronger national ecosystem for innovation, coupling scientific discovery with technology development and societal needs.
With the awards, the NSF I-Corps initiative will strategically identify nascent concepts and leverage NSF's investment in basic research for technology innovation. Members of the private sector will provide critical support by sharing their knowledge and experience with NSF and I-Corps awardees as I-Corps mentors. The I-Corps program will initially support up to 100 projects per year, at $50,000 a project.
Over a period of six months, each I-Corps team, composed of the principal investigator, a mentor, and an entrepreneurial lead, will systematically identify and address knowledge gaps to ascertain the technology’s potential. The I-Corps program will also pilot innovative merit review processes to enable quick and efficient identification of discoveries emerging from NSF-funded research projects for financial support, as well as for mentorship, through the national network.
The I-Corps program is now accepting inquiries for the next round of proposals and awards. Principal Investigators must contact one of the cognizant I-Corps program officers and receive prior written authorization to submit a proposal.
