U.S. Steel Plant Reduces Environmental Impact with New C Battery

Posted on: 1/31/2013 12:00:00 AM... U.S. Steel officially commissioned a new coke battery at its Clairton plant in Pittsburgh on January 31, complete with the steel industry tradition of casting silver dollars into the flaming coke. Clairton is the largest coke plant in North America and produces 4.5 million tons annually.

The $500 million project is one of the most extensive that U.S. Steel has ever undertaken. The technologically advanced C battery will replace the plant’s outdated ovens, resulting in greater efficiencies, lower emissions, and reduced environmental impact. The project has been underway since 2008 and includes the construction of two additional low-emission quench towers, as well as environmental rehabilitation of other plant batteries.

The project required more than 2.2 million labor hours and 2.4 million refractory bricks to complete. Production capacity is estimated at more than 900,000 tons.
