Nature Materials Highlights Challenges to Computational Materials Design |
Posted on: 2/21/2013 12:00:00 AM... Nature Materials has devoted a portion of its March 2013 issue to exploring the benefits—and potential barriers—to the development of the data sharing infrastructure that will be necessary to realize the fullest potential of computational materials design.
In the editorial, “Fueling Discovery by Sharing,” the author juxtaposes lessons learned from the Human Genome Project with the stated goals of the U.S. Materials Genome Initiative (MGI). Announced by President Barack Obama in 2011, the MGI aims to accelerate the discovery, development, and
deployment of advanced materials. The key enabler that the MGI has identified in achieving this is a “materials innovation infrastructure.” The TMS Orlando Materials Innovation Principles was cited in the editorial as an example of the collaborative approach envisioned by the MGI.
Also published in this issue is the review article, “The High-Throughput Highway to
Computational Materials Design,” which examines opportunities and challenges to generating and managing large data repositories, as well as the need for developing standardized protocols to facilitate sharing.
